Diwali is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Ram by lighting oil lamps (diyas) made of ghee and celebrated his homecoming. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Diwali began. To this day, people light diyas on Diwali and worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
